How Long Do I Grill a Ribeye Steak?
When cooking ribeye steaks on the grill, the first question many people ask is “How Long Do I Grill a Ribeye Steak?”
There is not set time for what is right or wrong for grilling a ribeye steak, but there are a few general guidelines to follow. It will largely depend on the size of the cut, as well as how you like your steak prepared. If you like your steak rare, or red/pink in the middle, you will need to cook it for considerably less time than you would if you wanted it well done!
If this is your first time to cook a ribeye steak, then you’ll want to make sure you read our handy directions below first!
1. Prepare the Meat: Ribeyes are often flavorful enough that at most they will only need a little salt and pepper if you’d like. You can add on other seasonings if you prefer, but good old salt and pepper is enough. Ideally you’ll have a fresh ribeye cut of meat that has nice white marbling through it. Never put a frozen steak on the grill! Make sure it is completely thawed first!
2. Get the Grill Hot: It’s best if the grill is already at its desired temperature. If you’re grilling over charcoal, you won’t have much control over temperature, but you’ll want to make sure that it is completely hot. If you have a gas grill, put it on the highest heat as safely possible. You should hear a sizzle when you put the steak on the grill.
3. Cook Your Steak for About 3-5 minutes on each side: This will depend again on the size of your steak. A thicker steak may be a little longer than a thin steak. You will want to try and avoid any flames that may flare up from grease dripping. When this happens, simply move the steak to another side of the grill temporarily. (A huge benefit of having a large grill!)
4. Check the Temp: You are probably reading this right now because you are planning on cooking a ribeye tonight for dinner, which means you likely don’t have a good meat thermometer yet. A meat thermometer is really the “only” way to know for sure when a steak is cooked. So, while it may be too late this time around, do yourself a favor and order one right now for next time!. You can get many different types, a digital one can be found for about $20 and well worth it!
In general, a medium rare steak is around 130-135 degrees. Medium is between 140-145 degrees and a well done steak is 165 degrees. When you have a meat thermometer, you can tell when to flip the steak (usually around 90-95 degrees) and when to stop cooking it.
5. Take off the Grill and Serve: Some steak aficionados will recommend that you place the steak on a plate and cover with a stainless steel bowl before serving to help heat the inside of the steak more without compromising the doneness. This is optional, but it does help if you like rare steaks but are not fond of a cold middle.
